Alarming Number of Children on Medicaid Denied Healthcare

An undercover investigation in Illinois has revealed that children on Medicaid are often denied healthcare by specialty physicians, while their privately insured peers gain access to the care that they need. The study confirms suspicions that many physicians are not inclined to provide treatment to patients who have public insurance coverage. Details of the investigation can be found in the The New England Journal of Medicine.

Investigative researchers posed as mothers who were seeking treatment of sick children insured by the Illinois Medicaid Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Alarmingly, nearly 66 percent of the children were denied care by the offices of doctors they approached. However, when claiming to have private Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance, a mere 10 percent of patients were turned away. Orthopedic specialist and psychiatrists were found to have the greatest likelihood of refusing to see Medicaid patients, at a whopping rate of 80 percent.

In a statement, lead researcher Dr. Karin Rhodes of the University of Pennsylvania said, “We found disturbing disparities in specialty physicians’ willingness to provide outpatient care for children with public insurance—even those with urgent and severe health problems.” Regarding the outcome of the research, Rhodes acknowledged, “This study shows a failure to care for our most vulnerable children.”

For their investigation, the researchers who posed as mothers of ill children phoned a total of 273 specialists in the Cook County, Illinois area to potentially get treatment for children having a variety of medical issues, including serious conditions such as uncontrolled asthma and new-onset seizures. However, it was disheartening to find that even children who suffered from epilepsy had only a 46 percent chance of receiving an appointment with a neurologist.

More than 50 percent of the physician office receptionists requested details of insurance coverage prior to granting an appointment, and some fast-refused an appointment when learning that the child in need of treatment had CHIP coverage. In addition, among those patients on Medicaid who actually succeeded in getting an appointment, appointments were scheduled an average of 22 days later than those for children having private health insurance.

With the continuing debate in Congress over rising health care costs, and the need of many Americans for better access to health insurance, the findings of the research appear to only add insult to injury. Although the recent health reform bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama will supposedly provide about 32 million people with the insurance coverage they so desperately need, a part of the coverage is to be achieved by the expansion of Medicaid. In addition, for others, healthcare assurance is gained by Medicare coverage.

But if physicians are unwilling to treat the multitudes of ill children who are dependent on public healthcare coverage, what will the chances be that countless adults requiring treatment for their ailments will actually receive it?

In a telephone interview, Rhodes noted, “The key take-home message is that every state needs to study its access. Otherwise, the disparities will continue and we’ll be blindsided to that. It’s very ethical to test the system, and I’m saying, ‘Here’s a model to use.’”

Rhodes also pointed out that due to the complexity of Medicaid paperwork, low compensation, and much delayed reimbursements, doctors have little to no incentive to accept patients who are covered by the program. This is especially true among physicians having small private offices.

Whereas the Medicaid CHIP pays an average of $99.36 for a patient consultation, the amount is only a little more than half of the average private insurance payment of $160. Doctor’s offices depend on cash flow to cover the overhead necessary for keeping the doors open to patients, creating a dependency between business success, and the ability of medical science to preserve health and save lives.

If this first state audit of Medicaid performed in Illinois is indicative of grim results that are yet to be confirmed across other states of the nation, it warns of impending doom for Obama care. And with the U.S. government planning to cut federal Medicaid spending and Medicare reimbursements, the foreboding only worsens.

More than $90 billion in special U.S. government funding for Medicaid will come to an end in just a few short weeks if nothing is done by lawmakers to extend the funding. This will cut benefits for millions. In addition, plans are in the works to reduce the amount of reimbursement for services provided by Medicare. These measures will force increases in costs among other areas of the nation’s health-care system, and only add to the number of Medicaid patients who are refused treatment by physicians. In addition, the benefit cutting moves will likely trigger an increase in the refusal of treatment for the scores of patients covered by Medicare.

How To Relieve Stress While At Work

Stress getting the better of you at work? Try some of these tips to help you de-stress and decompress.

Depending on where you work, your office can be a stressful environment. With deadlines and bosses and projects, sometimes the stress can get to be overwhelming. Use these following tips to help relieve some of that stress.

* One thing you need to do is to keep your eye on the big picture. What exactly are you stressing about? If you have a project deadline looming and have only a few days to complete it, ask yourself if you are putting too much upon yourself. Are there people in your office, like an office temp or intern, that can help you with the more tedious tasks of your project? Remember, most times, you do not have to do every single thing yourself, so be willing to give up some of the control and ask for help.

* A big cause of stress is the fact that we feel everything needs to be done at the last minute. For some of us, procrastination plays a big part in that. We wait until the deadline starts to loom closer before we kick our activity into high gear to get things working. Instead, if you have a big project or deadline, set up a reasonable time line of activities you need to perform or complete and stick to it. If you are a chronic procrastinator, it will take only one time to stick to a time line and complete a deadline ahead of schedule before you get won over to the other side.

* It may sound simple but a stress ball or a miniature game set (like a small basketball hoop and ball or a desk golf set) can work wonders on your nerves. Anytime you feel the pressure start to rise, take a few minutes and unwind by shooting a few hoops at your desk or taking a few breaths while squeezing a stress ball. Even if you don't have an official basketball hoop, you can just crumble up some paper and throw it into the trash can. Letting your mind relax and focus on other things will, ironically, help you focus better on the task you have at hand. Sometimes we sit at our desks so long focusing on one particular thing that we stress ourselves out too much and "fry" our brain.

* If the stress gets to be too much and sitting at your desk is making it worse, get out of the office. Instead of sitting at your desk eating lunch or even eating in the break room, go out for lunch with some colleagues or friends and pledge NOT to talk about office issues.

* It may be impossible to leave the office to go out to lunch, so simply grab a colleague and go for a walk around the building. Your mom was right when she said that the "fresh air will do you good." Most companies are required to give you a break time, so use it. It is to your benefit to get out of the work zone so you can decompress, even if it is only for a few minutes.

* Listen to some calm, soothing music. Maybe country music makes you unwind or maybe even hip-hop music. Grab some headphones, throw a cd into your computer or your stereo and let the unwinding begin. ja di

Daily Healthy Living Tips

With the hectic life that we all are living in, there are many important things in life that we tend to compromise on.  It may be easy to forget the importance of living a healthy life when we’re going through the daily grind. It may be even easier to get caught up in what’s convenient instead of what’s good for us. However, the benefits you can enjoy with a healthy lifestyle are worth making healthy living a priority!

Here are three healthy living tips you can use to better your health, increase your happiness, and enjoy life to its fullest:

1.     Rest and rejuvenate.

The biggest healthy living tip that many people overlook is the need for sleep.

Life can get hectic. When we don’t have enough time to get things done, most of us opt to stay up late to make up for the lack of time. Or perhaps our busy minds prevent us from getting a restful sleep in the first place. However, getting less sleep is actually counterproductive to doing anything efficiently, effectively, or well!

Getting enough sleep enables you to work and pursue your passions vigorously. It rejuvenates your body, mind, and attitude. You should have an ergonomically correct mattress and pillow to ensure you get the best sleep possible.

2.     Eat nutritious food.

Another healthy living tip is to eat a healthy, balanced diet. Many people believe that they don’t need to eat healthy or watch their diet because they don’t need to lose weight. This couldn’t be further from the truth! You should put only the best foods in your mouth no matter how much you weigh, what size you wear, or how fit you look.

    *
    * What you eat affects your entire body, including your brain. You can think clearer, feel happier, enjoy more energy and avoid illness by eating nutritious foods. Strive to eat more raw vegetables and fruits instead of processed or packaged foods.

3.     Affirm the positive.

Having a positive mindset is the key to living a fulfilling life. Many people don’t realize the importance of living and thinking positively. As a result, they inevitably find themselves allowing negative things to rule their mind and body.

    *
    * Your attitude is one of the most important contributors to both your happiness and health.

Like every other healthy living strategy mentioned, being positive all the time (or even most of the time) may take some effort. However, an easy way to incorporate positive thoughts into your everyday life is to use affirmations.

Many people use affirmations to help them think more positively as they go about their daily life. Positive affirmations are simply statements you can use to replace the negative thoughts running through your head.

    * A good affirmation encourages you to live the healthiest lifestyle possible and be the best that you can be.

Positive affirmations often remind you about how important it is to take care of yourself. An example could be, “I can neutralize bad habits with good food, exercise, and healthy living.”

This is a simple way to be reminded of how important you are, how important your body is, and how important your mental health is.

Simple Ways to Live a Healthy Lifestyle

You hear a lot about living a healthy lifestyle, but what does that mean? In general, a healthy person doesn't smoke, is at a healthy weight, eats healthy and exercises. Sounds simple, doesn't it?

The trick to healthy living is making small changes...taking more steps, adding fruit to your cereal, having an extra glass of water...these are just a few ways you can start living healthy without drastic changes.

Exercise

One of the biggest problems in America today is lack of activity. We know it's good for us but avoid it like the plague either because we're used to being sedentary or afraid that exercise has to be vigorous to be worth our time. The truth is, movement is movement and the more you do, the healthier you'll be. Even moderate activities like chores, gardening and walking can make a difference.

Just adding a little movement to your life can:

    * Reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes
    * Improve joint stability
    * Increase and improve range of movement
    * Help maintain flexibility as you age
    * Maintain bone mass
    * Prevent osteoporosis and fractures
    * Improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression
    * Enhance self esteem
    * Improve memory in elderly people
    * Reduce stress

So, even if you opt for small changes and a more modest weight loss, you can see the benefits are still pretty good. One study has found that just a 10% weight reduction helped obese patients reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and increase longevity.

Simple Ways to Move Your Body

You can start the process of weight loss now by adding a little more activity to your life. If you're not ready for a structured program, start small. Every little bit counts and it all adds up to burning more calories.

    * Turn off the TV. Once a week, turn off the TV and do something a little more physical with your family. Play games, take a walk...almost anything will be more active than sitting on the couch.
    * Walk more. Look for small ways to walk more. When you get the mail, take a walk around the block, take the dog for an extra outing each day or walk on your treadmill for 5 minutes before getting ready for work.
    * Do some chores. Shoveling snow, working in the garden, raking leaves, sweeping the floor...these kinds of activities may not be 'vigorous' exercise, but they can keep you moving while getting your house in order.
    * Pace while you talk. When you're on the phone, pace around or even do some cleaning while gabbing. This is a great way to stay moving while doing something you enjoy.
    * Be aware. Make a list of all the physical activities you do on a typical day. If you find that the bulk of your time is spent sitting, make another list of all the ways you could move more--getting up each hour to stretch or walk, walk the stairs at work, etc.

Learn about more ways to fit in exercise.

Eating Well

Eating a healthy diet is another part of the healthy lifestyle. Not only can a clean diet help with weight management, it can also improve your health and quality of life as you get older. You can use the new Food Guide Pyramid to determine how many calories you need and what food groups you should focus on or, if you're looking for smaller changes, you can use these tips for simple ways to change how you eat:

    * Eat more fruit. Add it to your cereal, your salads or even your dinners
    * Sneak in more veggies. Add them wherever you can--a tomato on your sandwich, peppers on your pizza, or extra veggies in your pasta sauce. Keep pre-cut or canned/frozen veggies ready for quick snacks.
    * Switch your salad dressing. If you eat full-fat dressing, switch to something lighter and you'll automatically eat less calories.
    * Eat low-fat or fat-free dairy. Switching to skim milk or fat free yogurt is another simple way to eat less calories without having to change too much in your diet.
    * Make some substitutes. Look through your cabinets or fridge and pick 3 foods you eat every day. Write down the nutritional content and, the next time you're at the store, find lower-calorie substitutes for just those 3 items.

How To Keep Your Immune System Strong 83

What the Immmune System Does

Basically the function of the immune system is to protect the body from viruses, bacteria, fungi, and all other harmful organisms that can enter our body. The breakdown of the immune system begins when toxins from the food we eat, the environment we live in and also a poor diet in general causes our systems to weaken and not function properly. When the immune system starts to weaken, our bodies are subject to fatigue and illness and it s very hard to ward off infections. The cells of the immune system are produced bythe thymus gland, spleen and other organs. The cells are carried throughout the body via the lymph system and to the lymph nodes. The nodes store the cells and help to create a barrier against infections settling in. What often happens is the immune cells become damaged when unstable oxygen molecules, which are known as "free radicals" become high in number, due to cigarette smoke, X-rays, alcohol, poor diet, and polluntants in the air. What needs to be done to rectify this is a healthy diet with vitamins that will strengthen the immune stystem by neutralizing the damaged cells.

Another factor in keeping the immune system up is routine exercise, even if it just a daily walk or jog. This will ensure good blood circulation so that the body will continuously get a plentiful supply of oxygen.
Specific Vitamins to Boost Immunity

The vitamins known as the antioxidants are C and E. What these vitamins do are stimulate immunity and protect the body against cancer by neutralizing the free radicals. Also Vitamin A strengthens the immune cells. The daily intake requirement of vitamin A is 1,000 RE; ususally found in just 1 carrot. For Vitamin C, about 60 mg or 1 orange. Lastly, Vitamin E consumption is about 10 mg or 2 tablespoons vegetable oil.

Herbal Stimulants and Humidity Levels

The following is a herbal immune booster that can be made and consumed daily.

3 carrots

1 apple

1 orange

1/2 beet

Just mix everything up in a juicer, seeds, peels and all; but it has to be a juicer. A blender will definitly not work. Drink and keep for only one day.A new batch should be made fresh everyday.

Indoor Humidity

If possible, try to keep the humidity level in your house somewhere between 30 to 50 percent. When you do this it doesn't allow the mucous membranes in the nose to dry out, thus protecting the cilia, the fine hairs that line the nose and act as barriers to keep germs from penetrating the body.
